Wild Indiana is a guide to more than one hundred and fifty of the Hoosier State's best outdoor destinations. It may be hard to believe, but there really are sand dunes, prairies, old growth forests, and other natural wonders left in Indiana. This book will show you how to get to those places, and tells you what to expect once you arrive. Wild Indiana contains more than 160 maps and 65 illustrations. Each destination entry includes GPS coordinates, detailed driving instructions, references, and a short narrative description. I've been traipsing around Indiana for more than twenty years. During that time, I've explored every destination in this book (and many others), most of them repeatedly. Wild Indiana is a compendium of my favorites. I hope that it will help you enjoy visiting natural Indiana as much as I have.

This book's secret weapon is the personal touch of its author. Rather than a collection of rote descriptions cribbed from DNR literature, it is clearly the work of someone who has spent years exploring Indiana and cares about every little nook of it. Crucially, he also clearly recognizes that while Indiana's natural sights might be modest compared to, say, the spectacular landscapes of the American West, there are some real gems in the state if you keep your eyes open. While all the expected state parks are covered, this book really shines in its coverage of small, obscure nature preserves, many of which I had never even heard of before learning about them here. I've lost count of how many pretty spots this book has introduced me to, many of which are so unknown that I was able to explore them completely alone, not another person in sight or earshot. This book is a very good resource if you care about beautiful natural places in Indiana.Product details

Wild Indiana Michael Habeck 9780982592908 Books Reviews
As a 25 year resident of Indiana, I was amazed to learn of the sheer number of places in my adopted state where you can get away for a brief respite from civilization. The author blends wry humor with informative conversational descriptions of each outdoor destination, and includes helpful suggestions on parking, recommendations on the most enjoyable trails for hiking, and opinions on limitations of each property as well as key landscape features you might enjoy. I particularly enjoyed the brief discussions of local history associated with each destination and the narratives describing the natural processes that contributed to the features of many of these "wild" destinations. I recommend this book to anybody interested in learning more about - or experiencing - the diversity of the natural environment across Indiana.
If you live in or are visiting Indiana and want to know where to go to interact with nature or just have a little outing for family time or fresh air, this is the book for you. Mr. Habeck details many options by region, and tells you what to expect at each destination. He has taken all of the guesswork out of what to expect, while at the same time creating a desire to visit and see these areas for yourself.
I will be using this book a lot!
I am a photographer always looking for natural settings for macro flower and landscape photography. Mr. Habeck describes not only the scenery I will find, but also describes the flowers I might encounter. Sometimes it takes a little work on Google locating these destinations because some at not searchable by name, but I consider that part of the adventure! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, hiking, photography, and the Indiana outdoors.
If you like hiking and are looking for new places to hike, this is the book for you. This book covers some of the best well known hikes in Indiana and tons of even better hikes that are off the beaten path. I have at least 6 other Indiana hiking books and I use this one the most, hands down. It's a couple years old but don't let that make you buy a newer book.
